1 killed, 1 Hurt in NM Oil Field Blast

One oil field worker died and another seriously injured in an oil field explosion in Jal, New Mexico Wednesday afternoon.

Rusty Harrison James died in the explosion at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and another worker, Tyler Winter, sustained injuries to his chest, torso, and right leg and emergency workers air lifted him to Lubbock for treatment.

The workers were loading oil field related materials into perforated pipe which they were installing into the drilling pipe when an explosion occurred, Sheriff’s officials said.

The victims suffered injuries from flying metal and shrapnel, but there was no fire associated with the explosion.

The oil field site belonged to Mesquite SWD out of Carlsbad, NM and the company working on the site was Warrior Wireline. Both of the victims worked for Warrior Wireline. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
