Over 33,000 gallons of saltwater has spilled in western North Dakota, said officials at the state Department of Health.

The spill, at a site operated by Hillstone Environmental Partners LLC in McKenzie County, has not impacted surface waters, according to the department, which is still investigating whether ground water suffered any problems.

Brine is an unwanted byproduct of oil production and the state considers it an environmental hazard. It is many times saltier than sea water and can easily kill vegetation exposed to it.

Department of Health and North Dakota Oil and Gas Division officials are at the site. The Health Department is monitoring the investigation.

Officials at Hillstone Environmental Partners were not immediately available for comment.
