Chemical Spill at Fletcher, NC, Plant

Crews are cleaning up a hydrochloric acid solution chemical spill at the Continental Teves plant that forced the evacuation of 80 employees early Thursday morning.

No one suffered injury in the spill, which happened at 3:50 a.m. at the plant off N.C. 280 between Mills River, NC, and Fletcher, NC.

About 4,500 gallons of a 33 percent hydrochloric acid solution leaked but officials ended up containing it a safety holding area inside the plant, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Frank Stout said.

Emergency responders say all safety procedures in place were fully effective and surrounding businesses were able to open.

An emergency hazardous materials team has inspected the facility, Stout said. The plant will close for several hours today to allow crews to clean up the spilled chemical.
