Contract Worker Killed in AL Chem Plant Blast

A contract worker died Tuesday after an explosion at a chemical plant in north Alabama, officials said.

Arab Fire Chief Ricky Phillips said a contract worker died in a blast that occurred at Umicore Specialty Chemicals in Arab, AL.

The explosion involved an empty sulfuric acid tank in a part of the plant still under construction. A group of workers were making connections to the tank when the accident occurred, officials said.

Officials said there was never any danger to the public. The company’s website said Umicore is a recycles and refines cobalt and nickel specialty chemicals, which it also markets.

The victim’s name was not immediately available pending notification of next of kin.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will investigate the incident.
