Emerson’s DeltaV SIS process safety system gained certification through safety certification provider, exida, as Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 3 capable per IEC 61508.
“This demonstrates that the design and development processes used for the DeltaV SIS Logic Solver, and its Relay, Relay Diode and Voltage Monitor modules meet the requirements of the IEC 61508 safety standard,” said Michael Medoff, senior safety engineer at exida. “The results of the detailed audit are documented in exida’s SafetyCase tool to verify that all relevant requirements of the standard are satisfied.”
As a part of the certification process, exida performed a Failure Mode Effect and Diagnostic Analysis (FMEDA), a structured, quantitative analysis which predicts failure rates, modes, and diagnostic coverage and their effects on system operation. The analysis gained further verification through fault injection testing. The FMEDA results provide SIS designers with the detailed reliability data required for SIL Verification.
“This is one of many steps we have taken to make it easy for our customers to comply with the IEC 61511 international safety standard,” said Emerson’s Mike Boudreaux, brand manager for the DeltaV SIS system. “The assessment results contribute to implementing safer operations in critical applications.”
