Equipment Failure Leads to Asphalt Plant Fire

A burner on a piece of mechanical equipment malfunctioned and caught on fire at the Coastal Bridge Co. asphalt plant.

A piece of equipment malfunctioned on a gas line Friday which caused a fire at an asphalt plant in Lafayette, LA, officials said.

The fire happened on the property of the Coastal Bridge Company, just south of the Lafayette Regional Airport.

Firefighters had the fire extinguished within 25 minutes, said fire department spokesperson Alton Trahan.

No buildings suffered damage by the fire, but some machinery did catch on fire. There were no reported injuries in the incident.

Trahan said the fire started when the burner on a piece of mechanical equipment malfunctioned and caught on fire.

An employee saw the fire and immediately called 911.

Coastal Bridge Company works with construction materials for roads including concrete, dirt and asphalt which is what they manufacture at their Lafayette location.
