Fatal Chem Plant Blasts in Uzbekistan

An explosion at a chemical plant in the city of Ferghana in Uzbekistan killed at least five people Thursday, the Central Asian country’s Emergency Ministry said.

“A total of five people have been killed at the site of the explosion, all of them were part of a repairmen team. Several others are now in a hospital,” said a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said who added production at the plant has not stopped.

The explosion took place at an ammonia production facility of the Farg’onaazot company, which produces fertilizers and other chemicals, the ministry said Thursday.

The explosion happened during repair and assembly work.

“There are casualties,” the ministry spokesperson said at the time, without disclosing the overall number.

The Emergency Ministry said the government has set up a commission to investigate the incident and to provide necessary assistance to the families of those injured.

No other details were immediately available.
