Fire at Waco Glass Plant

Firefighters in Waco, TX, rushed to the Owens-Illinois Glass Plant Tuesday morning after a fire broke out.

A piece of molten glass came in contact with a combustible material just before 7 a.m. and it started a small fire, an assistant fire chief said at the scene.

The plant’s internal fire suppression system activated and doused the small fire within seconds, before firefighters arrived.

No one suffered an injury in the incident and the fire department had cleared the scene by 8 a.m.

Over the years, Owens-Illinois has spent about $74 million to keep the facility’s beer-bottle production flowing.

The plant opened in 1944 and employs about 300 people.
