Fire Erupts after Chemical Spill

Employees at a North Chattanooga, TN, chemical company ended up evacuated after more than 2,000 gallons of products spilled from a barge and sparked a fire Friday morning.

Workers at JIT Chemicals on 530 Manufacturers Road were off-loading a “caustic soda” from a barge into a storage tank when some of the chemicals spilled out, according to officials.

An estimated 2,000 to 3,000 gallons of the product overflowed, with employees identifying it as a 50 percent solution of sodium hydroxide.

One worker suffered from contamination and transported to Erlanger Medical Center.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and an environmental cleanup company will assist in cleaning up the spilled caustic soda.

Plant personnel will investigate the cause of the incident.
