Spill estimates continue to rise from two damaged gasoline and diesel pipelines near Kankakee, IL owned by Buckeye Partners in Houston.

As many as 1,500 gallons might have spilled, said officials at Buckeye Partners.

Hazmat crews have been trying to keep the fuel from reaching the Kankakee River. Buckeye Partners’ health and safety director, Patrick Hodgins, said the pipelines suffered damage Wednesday by a power line that fell.

The company did not receive notification until Friday after emergency services received calls about a strong odor. The company then shut down both pipelines.

The company is monitoring air quality and well water and is testing soil, but said it is unaware of any public safety risk.

Residents of a nearby subdivision who use well water should drink bottled water for the time being.
