A fire at a dehydration and pumping platform in the Gulf of Mexico killed four workers, hurt 45 and forced the evacuation of 300 Wednesday.


Four workers died and up to 45 others suffered injuries during a fire on a Pemex dehydration and pumping platform Wednesday in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Pemex dehydration and pumping platform known as Abkatun Permanente is in the Campeche Sound on the west side of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Initially, Pemex said one contractor died and 16 Pemex workers were hurt, including two undergoing treatment in the hospital in grave condition. Local emergency services, however, said as many as 45 people suffered injuries.

About 300 workers ended up transferred out of the area while eight boats rushed to the scene to fight the fire, Pemex said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the blaze.
