At around 4 p.m., dispatch received a call of a furnace exploding at the plant.

“I don’t know how many people were in the area or in the building,” Sheriff Kent said.

Kent said the explosion instantly killed two men and injured another man. The injured man went to Marshall Memorial Hospital for treatment for burns to the head. Kent said his injuries were not life threatening and he should be okay.

“The next of kin has been notified on the two fatalities,” Kent said. “We’re awaiting the medical examiner and the fire marshal to come and start their investigation.”

Kent said the company uses natural gas at the factory that makes agricultural and industrial wire products, but he is not sure if that was the cause of the blast. He said once the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) completes the investigation, more information should be available.
