Pumps Fail, Release Untreated Wastewater

An equipment malfunction at the Bay County, FL, Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant lift station near Veterans Park in Callaway caused the discharge of 25,000 gallons of untreated wastewater Wednesday.

The wastewater released into a creek adjacent to the facility after pumps failed during regular testing of a power generator at the lift station.

Bay County Utilities completed a cleanup of the site and will engage in water quality testing at the creek until all samples have been cleared.

In an unrelated incident, wastewater plants have been in the public eye as a Panama City woman is now facing charges of tampering with several wastewater systems in Bay County.

Carmen Teresa Sapp, 33, ended up arrested Nov. 16 after a multiagency investigation into a woman tampering with various municipal lift stations, said Panama City Beach police.

Sapp ended up captured on surveillance video at a business in Panama City as well the Panama City Beach Waste Water Treatment Facility, officials said.

Sapp entered a facility in Panama City and in Panama City Beach and turned off the power, according to incident reports and her arrest affidavits.
