Illegally dumped radioactive oil field socks ended up discovered in western North Dakota, state health officials said.

Up to 100 filter socks were at a property within the city limits of Williston, ND, said officials with the Division of Waste Management after the Thursday discovery. The socks are the nets that strain liquids in the oil production process.

The cleanup should begin Friday, said Scott Radig with the Division of Waste Management.

Radig said the waste was in a facility used by Green Diamond Environmental Trucking Services, LLC. He said the company told state investigators another company dropped the socks at the site.

The trucking company hired a contractor for the cleanup.

The state banned socks for disposal, so they should end up hauled to certified facilities in other states.
