A ruptured oil gathering line caused a spill into a creek in Ritchie County, WV, Thursday, state environmental officials said.

About 1,200 barrels of oil leaked from the line owned by West Virginia Oil Gathering in Harrisville, WV, said Department Environmental Protection spokeswoman Kelley Gillenwater. Officials haven’t determined how much oil went into the creek.

The cleanup could take several weeks, Gillenwater said. She added the creek ended up dammed to contain the spill and officials shut down the line.

Gillenwater said officials don’t know how long the line had been leaking.
