The explosion was the result of a lab process that happens on a routine basis, police said. An error occurred, which caused a small explosion that triggered heat sensors in the building.

While investigating the explosion, Montgomery County police recovered Controlled Dangerous Substances used in the manufacture of drugs. Police did not specifically say which substances they found.

A member of the NIST security force suffered non-life threatening injuries in the explosion. The worker went to a local trauma center for treatment and later released.

Police could not confirm any criminal activity and there are no charges yet.
