Russellville, AR-based Arkansas Nuclear One (ANO) Plant’s Unit 2 remains offline due to a transformer fire that occurred Monday.

“The transformer is located in the site switchyard, a non-nuclear portion of the plant,” Mike Bowling with the plant owner Entergy. “The fire was contained and extinguished, and there was no impact on public health or safety.”

ANO officials are trying to determine the cause of the transformer failure and subsequent restart plan. Because of the fire, ANO entered a notification of unusual event, the lowest of four emergency classifications designated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The plant is now out of the unusual event classification.

ANO Unit 1 remains online, and both units are in safe, stable condition. Power to Unit 2 is coming from one source of offsite power and an emergency diesel generator.
