A worker suffered what authorities said was a life-threatening injury at a Cedar Rapids, IA, manufacturing plant.

Cedar Rapids Firefighters got the call at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday to Red Star Yeast where a 35-year-old man ended up caught between the side of a scissor lift and an I-beam, a department spokesman said.

Crews took the man to University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, where his condition remains unknown at this time.

Iowa OSHA started an inspection at the plant.

Just one week before the incident, the company held its official grand opening of a new addition to Headland’s Red Star Yeast plant.

The focus of the addition, which reflects a $22 million investment and the addition of around 20 jobs, is a new dry yeast facility. The plant has historically produced a fresh liquid yeast for the industrial bakery market.
