Authorities say an ammonia leak at a northern West Virginia factory that makes frozen treats prompted five workers to end up treated for exposure.
The leak ended up discovered at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Ziegenfelder plant in Wheeling, WV, prompting officials to evacuate the factory. The plant uses ammonia for its refrigeration system.
Wheeling Fire Chief Larry Helms says no one suffered serious injuries. Four workers had breathing complications and ended up taken to an area hospital. Medical personnel treated another worker at the scene.
Ziegenfelder president and chief executive Lisa Allen said workers were able to contain the ammonia leak and the factory remains closed.
The factory makes BudgetSaver twin pops and other frozen treats sold in grocery stores nationwide.
