The Yokogawa AXR magnetic flowmeter gained Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 3 certification per IEC 61508, said exida officials.

“The solid self-diagnostics of the flowmeter allowed it to pass the random hardware requirements of the standard,” said exida Evaluating Assessor Griff Francis. “Yokogawa’s procedures and project documents also demonstrated high design quality that met SIL 3 Capability per IEC 61508.”

In addition to a Failure Mode Effect and Diagnostic Analysis (FMEDA), exida also conducted a field failure study. A fault injection test also verified the FMEDA results, according to exida, a functional safety certification company.

“exida has the technical depth to understand how functional safety is achieved in transmitter products,” said Kaoru Sonoda, Yokogawa marketing manager. “This gives our customers confidence that our products are well suited to safety critical applications especially when combined with our field experience.”
