Nearly 12,000 gallons of saltwater spilled at a disposal well in the northern part of North Dakota, state oil officials said.

Petro Harvester Operating Company, LLC, reported the incident Wednesday, said Alison Ritter with the Oil and Gas Division. The operator said 11,970 gallons of saltwater, or brine, released at the Peterson 2 saltwater disposal well in Bottineau County, about six miles north of Maxbass, ND.

Saltwater is an unwanted byproduct of oil production and state considers it an environmental hazard. It is many times saltier than sea water and can easily kill vegetation exposed to it.

Ritter said the operator reported that a piping connection leak caused the spill. Workers were able to contain the water and recover it on site.

A state inspector has visited the location.
