Chlorine Spill Forces ‘Code Red’

Cynthiana, KY, residents ended up with a shelter in place order Thursday evening after a chlorine leak at a water treatment plant.

A ‘Code Red’ went out at 7:30 p.m. asking residents to stay indoors with their windows closed while crews worked to assess the situation and finish cleaning up after the leak, police said.

Workers found the source of the leak and capped it, according to police, but they believe Chlorine did make it about half a mile down the river.

Police also said the local Wal-Mart ended up evacuated as a precaution but no other business in the area suffered from the problem.

The Hazmat crew ended up called in for clean-up and police lifted the Code Red at 10:30 p.m.

There were no injuries or illnesses reported in the incident which remains under investigation.
