In an effort to boost reliability and eliminate unplanned downtime, Turkey’s largest steel producer inked a deal with Honeywell to modernize its main steel manufacturing plant.
Erdemir Iron and Steel Company’s Karadeniz Eregli production facility in Zonguldak, located on the Black Sea will undergo the modernization process to hike ease-of-operation and reliability at the site.
As a part of the upgrade, Honeywell will implement an Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS) and two C300 Controllers at the plant. The goal is for the PKS to give operators more control of the production process and improve decision making in the control room. Operators will be able to access more diagnostics information. For future expansion, the open design will make it easier for Erdemir to modify further on down the road.
By using the latest technology, the plant will be able to boost reliability and help prevent unplanned shut-downs, which were issues in the past. In addition, the new system should also help reduce maintenance costs. Honeywell will also deliver a range of services including consultancy, installation, start-up and system training.
“This project is significant not just for the future of the Karadeniz Eregli plant but to our market competitiveness,” said Serdar Ertan, operations manager, Erdemir.
“As Turkey’s economy grows, so too does the need for a plentiful supply of raw materials such as steel,” said Naci Erakin, country leader for Honeywell Process Solutions Turkey. “This will enable (the company) to take advantage of the building boom in Turkey and hold its own against local and global competition well into the future.”
Erdemir began operating in 1965 and today has a production capacity of 5.2 million tons/year of crude steel. The company is Turkey’s only flat steel producer and manufactures plates, hot and cold rolled sheet and tinplate. The Karadeniz Eregli production facility is the company’s largest.
