Two firefighters sustained smoke inhalation from a fire that began in a compactor at the President Container company facility off Ballard Road in the Town of Wallkill, Orange County.

The two-alarm fire ended up fueled by the corrugated cardboard boxes the facility manufactures, said Orange County Fire Coordinator Vini Tankasali.

“The fire department encountered numerous bails of corrugated cardboard on fire in the building. Mechanicstown Fire Department extinguished the fire and was assisted by about eight other fire departments,” he said. “The building itself received some minor structural damage.”

There were no injuries in the fire, but due to the heat several Mobile Life Support Services ambulances were at the scene as a precaution.

Mechanicstown firefighters were aided by several other Orange County departments to fight the May 18 fire that spread to the roof.
