A fire broke out at an electronics recycling facility last week in South Fulton, Georgia, leading to explosions, a heavy smoke condition and falling debris.

Firefighters got the call, Sunday, September 6 at 4:31 p.m. for a fire at the Providence Green Recycling Center on Mallory Road. The facility handled electronic waste including computers, batteries, computer components and other materials. Officials also reported the presence of cylinders at the site.

South Fulton fire officials said cylinders were exploding as the fire developed, with projectiles reported in nearby areas. The incident produced a large plume of black smoke that was visible across parts of the Atlanta area.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control the following day.

Fire investigators were unable to enter the building initially because of the heat and structural conditions and were continuing their investigation as emergency personnel worked to keep the site safe.

Thick smoke from the fire was visible for miles. South Fulton Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Jerome Byrd Jr. said firefighters faced difficult conditions because of debris and a roof collapse.

“There is a lot of debris. The roof collapsed, so we have to navigate those obstacles so we can get to the scene of the fire,” Byrd said.
