A fire from burning plastic barrels caused thick black smoke to waft over St. Paul, Minnesota remains under investigation, officials said.

Firefighters extinguished a blaze at an industrial site in St. Paul’s Hamline-University area Sunday, October 4. They got the call at 3:30 p.m. for an exterior fire was at Metal Treaters Inc., also known as MTI Tool and Die, on Prior Avenue near Pierce Butler Route.

There were no injuries in the incident. Also, there were no immediate concerns about machinery or chemicals, said Deputy Fire Chief Jamie Smith. Meanwhile, some of the fire extended into the building, however firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze.

The fire remained limited to multiple plastic totes that produced heavy, black smoke.

“Crews extinguished the fire using hose lines and powerful water streams from fire engines and an aerial ladder. The fire did not spread inside the building, searches were all clear, and no employees or firefighters ended up injured,” fire officials said.
