One man died and another is in the hospital following an explosion while they were maintaining a furnace last Tuesday at a steel treating plant in Saginaw, MI.

A maintenance crew was working on a furnace at Hi-Tech Steel Treating Tuesday afternoon when it exploded, said Fire Battalion Chief Thomas Raines.

“They were working on a door of the furnace to try to find a leak, and the door itself seemed to explode. At this point, it’s preliminary and it’s hard to tell exactly what caused the explosion,” Raines said. “There was no fire. The explosion seemed to be maybe the air pressure.”

Raines said it was the blast that injured the men.

The injured man is at Covenant HealthCare. Raines believes he has severe injuries, but is stable.

The name of the man who died remained withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear, Raines said.

The incident has been ruled an industrial accident and the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration was at the scene and will conduct an investigation, said Fire Chief Christopher Van Loo.
