A chemical plant employee received minor injuries when a fire broke out when he was mixing chemicals at the northeast Elkhart, IN, facility Friday.

The Elkhart Fire Department got the call just before 9 a.m. to Edge Adhesives for a report of an explosion. The fire was accidental and officials suspect no negligence, said Inspector Rodney Dale.

“He’s gonna be fine,” Dale said of the employee, who was mixing a tank of chemicals when the fire broke out.

Firefighters feared other flammable chemicals in the area could catch fire, but Dale said the plant’s fire suppression system functioned properly and no other damage occurred. A little charring at the top of the tank was the only sign that anything had happened, he said.

Twenty-six firefighters responded and they cleared the scene within two hours.
