“We have units from Rose Hill, Andover, Augusta, Sedgwick county, Mulvane, Derby, McConnell Air Force Base, Douglass, Benton, and the emergency medical service that of course all have units here. It’s a very labor intensive fire. We had to go inside to try and fight it,” Rose Hill PIO Jim Schmidt said.

Crews got the main body of the fire knocked down fairly quickly but were battling hot spots until about 2 a.m. Wednesday. Damage is estimated at $1.7 million to the structure and contents.

No one was hurt but officials say they had to be careful because there was a lot of toxic paint in the building that was on fire.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
