An employee was beginning operations at the plant when a silo containing liquid asphalt exploded, officials said.

“It is apparent that a valve malfunctioned on one their hoppers and an explosion resulted,” the Leesburg Police Department said.

The employee was not seriously injured and was treated at the scene.

As a result of the blast, metal was thrown all over the facility. Crews spent the morning peeling dangling metal off the silos and beginning cleanup efforts.
