A fire led to a plant evacuation, one worker suffering an injury, and a road closure Thursday afternoon in Graniteville, South Carolina, officials said.

The fire broke out Thursday, September 10 at 2 p.m. at Graniteville Specialty Fabrics, 511 Leitner St., Graniteville. Fire crews initially feared it was a chemical fire. However, they later explained that what caught fire was a machine that works with chemicals.

As a result of the fire, the sprinkler system activated and put out most of the blaze, but the fire moved up a duct connected to the machine.

That is when local fire crews − assisted by multiple other agencies − put out that portion of the fire.

At the time of the blaze, one of the key initial concerns was working toward evacuating the building of all its workers.

Next, a section of Leitner remained closed to traffic in the area. By 2:25 p.m., firefighters extinguished the fire.

One worker suffered an injury in the incident, but refused to go to the hospital.

Cause of the fire remains unclear and the incident remains under investigation.
