Constellation’s application to extend the operating license of the R.E. Ginna nuclear power plant in Ontario, New York, just outside of Rochester, by 20 years, from 60 to 80 years total ended up accepted by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

NRC staff determined the application has sufficient technical and environmental information to begin a full safety and environmental review, including audits, ahead of a licensing decision.

“Based on the results of this sufficiency review, the NRC staff has concluded that the application is acceptable for docketing,” the NRC said in a letter approving the application.

“This determination does not preclude requests for additional information or topic-specific audits, nor does it constitute a decision that a renewed operating license should be issued,” the letter said. “During the NRC staff’s detailed technical review, the staff may identify issues that impact its ability to complete that review. You will be advised by separate correspondence of any further information needed to support the NRC staff’s detailed technical review.”

If approved, Ginna could operate through Sept. 18, 2049. The plant first gained its license in 1969 for 40 years and renewed in 2004 for 20 more, extending its license to 2029. Ginna employs a single unit Westinghouse 2-Loop pressurized water reactor.
