A western North Dakota facility that handles radioactive material must cease operations immediately.

The state’s Department of Health on Thursday issued an emergency order to secure the Killdeer, ND, facility operated by Dyad Environmental, LLC.

The order said after inspections conducted earlier this month, they found various safety violations including the lack of a qualified radiation safety officer on staff.

The department says the company must cease all operations at the plant and allow state inspectors to verify compliance with the order.

The facility handles radioactive filter socks, a byproduct of the oil industry. The filter socks bear technologically enhanced, naturally occurring radioactive material, commonly referred to as TENORM.
