Siemens has workarounds and mitigations available users can apply to reduce the risk of classic buffer overflow vulnerabilities that have public exploits available in OpenSSL 3.0 within its Calibre ICE, Mcenter, SCALANCE X-200RNA switch family, SICAM GridPass, SIMATIC RTLS Locating Manager, according to a report with CISA.
Successful exploitation of these remotely exploitable vulnerabilities, which Siemens self-reported, could allow for a denial of service or remote code execution.
The following products from Siemens suffer from the vulnerabilities:
- Calibre ICE: Versions 2022.4 and after
- Mcenter: Versions 5.2.1.0 and after
- SCALANCE X-200RNA switch family: Versions 3.2.7 and after
- SICAM GridPass (6MD7711-2AA00-1EA0): Versions 1.80 and after
- SIMATIC RTLS Locating Manager (6GT2780-0DA00): Versions 2.13 and after
In one issue, an attacker could craft a malicious email address to overflow four attacker-controlled bytes on the stack. This buffer overflow could result in a crash (causing a denial-of-service condition) or potential remote code execution. In a TLS client, this can be triggered by connecting to a malicious server. In a TLS server, this can be triggered if the server requests client authentication while a malicious client connects. Fixed in OpenSSL 3.0.7 (Affected versions 3.0.0, 3.0.1, 3.0.2, 3.0.3, 3.0.4, 3.0.5, and 3.0.6).
CVE-2022-3602 is the case number assigned to this vulnerability, which has a CVSS v3 base score of 7.5.
In addition, an attacker could craft a malicious email address in a certificate to overflow an arbitrary number of bytes containing the `.’ character (decimal 46) on the stack. This buffer overflow could result in a crash (causing a denial-of-service) condition. In a TLS client, this can be triggered by connecting to a malicious server. In a TLS server, this can be triggered if the server requests client authentication and a malicious client connects. This vulnerability is fixed in OpenSSL 3.0.7 (Affected versions 3.0.0, 3.0.1, 3.0.2, 3.0.3, 3.0.4, 3.0.5, and 3.0.6).
CVE-2022-3786 is the case number assigned to this vulnerability, which has a CVSS v3 base score of 7.5.
The product sees use mainly in the critical manufacturing sector, and on a global basis.
An attacker with low skill level could leverage these low complexity vulnerabilities.
Siemens identified the following specific workarounds and mitigations users can apply to reduce risk:
- Calibre ICE: Current distribution of the affected version is only “beta;” users are recommended to wait for the update version, which will also patch OpenSSL
- Mcenter: Ensure only trusted (CA) certificates are contained in the Machine Agent’s truststore
- SICAM GridPass (6MD7711-2AA00-1EA0): In the truststore, do not add CA certificates that contain a nameConstraint-extension with punycode-encoded internationalized domain names
- Siemens products contain inga vulnerable TLS server and have certificate-based client authentication enabled: do not configure trust for CA certificates with a nameConstraint-extension with punycode-encoded internationalized domain names
- Siemens products containing a vulnerable TLS client: Where this option is configured, ensure TLS server certificate verification is turned; do not configure trust for CA certificates with a nameConstraint-extension with punycode-encoded internationalized domain names
As a general security measure, Siemens recommends protecting network access to devices with appropriate mechanisms. In order to operate the devices in a protected IT environment, Siemens recommends configuring the environment according to Siemens’ operational guidelines for industrial security and to follow the recommendations in the product manuals.
