PA Steel Plant Furnace Blast Hurts 2

One worker remains in the hospital suffering from burns and another ended up treated at the scene of an electric arc furnace explosion at a western Pennsylvania steel plant.

The blast occurred at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday at the AK Steel plant in Butler Township, about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh.

One worker ended up flown to UPMC Mercy hospital in Pittsburgh with burns on his legs, face and eyes, said company spokeswoman Lisa Jester. She added his injuries were burns, but he should survive. The burned worker was wearing protective gear at the time. Another worker who medical personnel treated for minor injuries on site is doing well.

The company was investigating the cause of the blast which involved in the electric arc furnace.

The plant does electrical and stainless steel melting and casting, hot and cold steel rolling and steel finishing.
