New Berlin Fire Department got the call to Denali Ingredients Friday, August 14 at 7:45 a.m. for an industrial incident at 13765 W. Ryerson Road for a report of a worker’s hand trapped in industrial machinery.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a complex machinery entrapment requiring an extended and highly coordinated rescue operation. Based on the circumstances encountered on scene, firefighters requested additional specialized medical and technical rescue resources.
An additional physician and medical director from Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin also responded to the scene to provide further support, according to New Berlin Fire Department. Additionally, the City of Waukesha Fire Department Special Services Team provided specialized equipment and personnel for the machinery extrication.
Complex Rescue
Due to the nature of the patient’s injuries and anticipated medical needs, Wauwatosa Fire Department Med 51 was also requested to the scene. Med 51 is one of the closest Milwaukee County paramedic units equipped with blood administration capabilities, fire officials said.
Firefighters, physicians, law enforcement personnel, technical rescue specialists, and the business’s maintenance staff worked collaboratively to carefully disassemble and manipulate the industrial equipment while providing continuous medical care to the injured worker, fire officials said.

At 9:21 a.m., emergency workers successfully extricated the worker from the machinery. Emergency workers rushed the worker to an area hospital in stable but serious condition.

Denali Ingredients is a food ingredients manufacturer that expanded to its West Ryerson Road location in 2019, according to its website. The 98,000-square-foot facility produces baked inclusions, including brownie and cheesecake pieces popular in ice cream and other sweet treats.
