The fire broke out in Lybrook, just outside of San Juan County, about 12:30 p.m. and firefighters put it out later on in the afternoon but not before charring a rig. The blaze lasted several hours.

County officials are still investigating the cause of the fire. Flores said it may have been from a backfire that occurred on the rig when gas got into the motor.

Crews from several counties helped fight the fire, including Sandoval, San Juan and Rio Arriba. Workers said it appeared to be a service rig, which is smaller than a drilling rig, and work on sites in need of repair. That kind of rig only operates during the day.

The rig is not operating and it is unclear if or when it may reopen.
