Liberty Lake, Washington-based utility technology provider, Itron Inc., suffered a cyberattack earlier this month and is continuing its investigation into the hack.
“On April 13, 2026, Itron, Inc. ended up notified that an unauthorized third party had gained access to certain of its systems,” the company said in an 8-K report to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). “The company activated its cybersecurity response plan and launched an investigation with the support of external advisors to assess, mitigate, remediate, and contain the unauthorized activity.”
Additionally, the company’s response efforts included proactively notifying law enforcement.
Itron said it took action to remediate and remove the unauthorized activity and has not observed any subsequent movement within its corporate systems. Further, the company found no unauthorized activity in the customer hosted portion of its systems.
As a result of Itron’s contingency plans and data backup systems, its operations have continued in all material respects. In addition, Itron currently expects insurers to reimburse the company a significant portion of its direct costs incurred relating to the incident.
The company is evaluating what legal filings and regulatory notifications they will have to do might be required because of this incident and intends to take appropriate action based on its review and findings.
While the Company’s investigation and assessment of this incident is ongoing, the Company does not currently believe the incident has had or is reasonably likely to have a material impact on the Company.
Itron is a public technology company that provides smart, industrial IoT (IIoT) solutions, software, and advanced metering infrastructure for electricity, gas, and water utilities. Itron enables utilities to manage energy/water, improve efficiency, and enhance grid reliability via smart meters and data analytics.
No further information was immediately available on who was behind the attack and what kind of attack it was.
