Two contractors suffered injuries after an explosion at a chemical factory in a Louisville, Kentucky industrial zone Tuesday.

Pleasure Ridge Park (PRP) Fire and Louisville Fire got the call to a reported explosion and possible fire around 11:13 a.m. Tuesday, October 6 in the 4400 block of Bells Lane, which is the address for Carbide Industries.

Carbide Industries is North America’s largest producer of calcium carbide.

Officials said crews found a small fire involving a 5,000-pound transfer tote located in a staging area outside the building.

Two contractors ended up injured in the incident and emergency personnel were treating them for burns, said PRP Fire Chief Jason Meiman.

Both workers were later transported to local hospitals for treatment. Their current condition remains unknown.

Meiman said a preliminary investigation indicate the incident appears to have been a “flash fire.”

Once there was no further hazard, officials turned the scene over to the plant’s representatives who will continue investigating the cause of the incident.

An explosion occurred at Carbide Industries last October, however there were no injuries in the incident. In March 2011, there was a fatal explosion at the factory.
